The Interview
When did you start writing?
Since I was about eight years old. I loved the old Encylopedia Brown series and I wanted desperately to write stories like those as well as write about sports. I had my little electric typewriter and I'd hack away as best I could!
What inspired you to do it?
When I was very young, the inspiration came from the Encyclopedia Brown books as well as comic books, mostly Spiderman and Batman. As I got into my teen years I tried my hand at songwriting as Bruce Springsteen and Pete Townshend were my favorite songwriters and these days I've been inspired by authors such as Neil Gaiman, Gipi and Neil Kleidd.
What projects have you done?
I've done four self published children's books - 2005's "Hanukkah Counts Too!", 2006's "Destructo Boy and Spillerella", 2007's "Hockey Days" and 2008's "Hockey Player For Life". The two hockey books have been used extensively by NHL teams in their community and educational initiatives and "Hockey Player For Life" has been the on and off #1downloaded kids hockey book on the Kindle chart. "The Stereotypical Freaks" is my first traditionally published book.
Any new projects coming up?
Yes, I am working on the sequel to "The Stereotypical Freaks", another graphic novel and I hope to have it out next Christmas but we'lll see how that works out.
Are you an independent artist or are you represented by an agency?
I am an independent artist but I am seeking representation.
Any favorite bands? Do you use music to inspire you as you write?
Answering the second question first, yes, music is a huge inspiration on my writing. It's easily the #1 inspiration! So much so that at the beginning of each chapter of "Freaks" I listed recommended listening songs. As far as favorite bands, there are so many but if I had to choose some favorites they would be (in no particular order) - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Who, Big Country, U2, The Afghan Whigs, The Rolling Stones, Urge Overkill, Green Day, Van Halen and Soul Asylum.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
I think the num,ber one thing is to have a extremely thick skin because the rejection will come fast and furious. You can almost turn it around and have the atittude that "I'll show you" that is what I've developed. And you can't let the rejection get to you, you have to roll with it and develop a never say die attitude. You need that base and from there be open to criticism and work as incredibly hard as you can.
Anything you would like to share with readers on a personal note that would allow them to get to know you better?
Well, I'm a married father of two sons (both 13 years old) and I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Writing is not my full time job, I am an Accountant by trade for a visual effects studio. I am more then happy, and would encourage anyone and everyone to get in otuch with me if they had any questions or would like more info! My email addy is hockeyplayer4life@gmail.com and my website is howardshapiro.net
Do you find it hard to share your work with others?
It's a good question because I am an extremely shy and quiet person but writing is actually my escape from that and a chance to "speak up" and be heard. It can be tough to lay your emotions out because no matter what, as the writer, part of you is in the characters. The character of Tom in all of the books I've done is mostly me or how I'd like to be or act. My "Hockey Days" book was very personal in that it was about me and my dad and our relationship and how hockey brought us closer together. He passed away in 2005 and so I did the book as a tribute to him and to give myself and my sons a great way to remember him in better times when he was still alive. So, its difficult at times for me to read it, to this day, because I really would give anything tohave him still here. So, putting those emotions out there is difficult when you are a very private person as I am. But in the end, writing is a great outlet and if I didn't have it I would have a very large therapy bill!!
Did your writing come from just a need to express yourself or a particular experience that you had?
Excellent question! It actually came from both! First and foremost though it is the best way, at least for me, to express myself. As I said in question #9, I am a very quiet and reserved person so to have an outlet to express myself is very important! Some people do it by painting or through art, some via call in talk shows or letters to the editor etc. For me, it is putting my deep emotions on paper through fictional characters as an outlet to get those thoughts out. As an adult, one thing that got me back into writing in my twenties was seeing the movie "Reality Bites." After seeing that at the theatre I was so angry that a movie that had potential could be so bad (sorry "Reality Bites" fans) that I thought, I can do better. I'm not saying that I have done better but it is a challenge everyday to try and GET better and have my writing get to an A level. Its what I strive to do every single day, get better!
Child of War-Rising Son Novel #3 in the OF WAR Series
Excerpt------The Flaming Shades in the Sixth Circle of Hell grew brighter with the rush of air to feed them, stirring a long dead hunger within. Fiery faces gnarled in anger and victory as they closed in. Raven took another full-circle sweep with the spear. This time it went right through those closest to him, cutting them in half for a moment only to have them come back together to continue their approach with blazing hands outstretched. Their burning souls quickly used up all of what passed for air in the Underworld until Raven couldn't get a single gasp of it. The force that crashed down upon him wanting to bring him to his knees grew stronger as the air grew weaker, as the rushing roar of flames created a vacuum around him threatening to collapse his lungs even as it turned the remaining air in them to steam. Gathering his fleeting strength, Raven stabbed out with the spear and watched it pass through the nearest attacker to no avail. When he drew it back he noticed a curious thing; the six foot wood handle wasn't charred or burned in the slightest; neither was the razor sharp blade at the end. "They're not real," he mumbled, taking in the sight of the unblistered spear. "Get back!" Lashing out again, he tried to hold onto the belief that what he was seeing had no power over him. The strike hit a flaming shade in front of him. When it passed through its burning body, he felt weight, as though he hit something more than air. The shade stumbled backwards but the others continued their onslaught. Raven knew the spear wouldn't be enough but he did have something else. Dropping the spear to the hot soil, he yanked the stopper out of one of his wineskins. He held up the skin like a gun, gave a good squeeze, and a good stream of water spurted it from it as he made another sweep. The Flaming Shades screamed they stumbled backwards in retreat. Raven hit them again. Again, they screeched in agony as their power, their heat, and their fire began to fade. Another blast and those nearest him went out like candles in a rainstorm, leaving little wispy trails of smoke behind. "You're DEAD. You're NOTHING." Raven let another spurt fly as he picked up the spear to holster it and then take a few steps forward. Steps that quickly grew from hesitant to assured as the Flaming Shades backed up in horror. "Get away from me, go back to the hell you're sentenced to and I won't send you to Oblivion." To accentuate his point, Raven gave the skin another squeeze. Most of the Flaming Shades already backed out of reach of the stream but a few brave defiant ones remained; when the water hit them they turned to steam, convincing their compatriots to turn fiery tail and run. With his bare feet buried in the hot soil and the air around him returning to 'normal', Raven stood trying to catch his breath, watching the blazing army flee. Wiping his forearm across his sweaty brow to clear the layer of glistening sweat, he listened to his heart thundering in his chest and felt the rush of adrenaline bolt through him. This was his first real battle and he was victorious. Wherever he was, Raven hoped Ares was watching with pride.
I have the amazing Andrea Norwich here with us. Welcome Andrea!! So nice to have you here. Andrea has graciously agreed to answer my questions. The Trailer
The Interview
1. When did you start writing?
I have always written poems and short stories. It has been a hobby (or rather an escape) since I was a teen.
As for Turn of the Lykoi, I started writing the story back in 2004. I shelved the story for about 6 years, with only 3 chapters left to go. I just couldn't find the proper ending to the story. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to continue the saga in another installment, or if I wanted to have an actual ending.
2. What inspired you to do it?
It started with the love of Laurell K Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series. She's an amazing writer. Her AB series focuses on vampires, werewolves, necromancers and s-e-x and gore. I couldn't stop reading her novels. One after another, it continued to feed my addiction. I did find, however, that how I thought about werewolves and how she wrote about werewolves, were just..........different. It got to the point where it really bothered me that our views were so different. (Yes, I understand that I was having an imaginary disagreement with an author I have only met a couple of times at various book signing). I just couldn't seem to let it go. I talked about it to friends and family (well, really anyone who would listen), about my view of werewolves. I guess people around me got tired of hearing me moan and gripe because I was suddenly flooded with request to "just write the visions down." Oh gosh. Really? WHAT A GREAT IDEA!
I started to write a short story about a woman, who was a werewolf, and well-the rest is history!
3. What projects have you done?
Beyond some short stories and poems (and the occasional term paper for pals, lol), Turn of the Lykoi is the first published work that I have. Well, actually, there is a published short story about a Kender, on the Kencyclopedia website. I had a run with the Dragon Lance series and Dungeons and Dragons genre. I still enjoy the fantasy world and might continue the character I wrote about at that time. But for now, I'm sticking to my beasties.
4. Any new projects coming up?
I'm working on the second installment to the Lykoi Series, called "Chains of the Turned". It's the continuation of the story. There will be one more after Chains of the Turned, that will finish the story, though I might actually do a few spin off stories about some of the flavorful characters I've introduced to everyone.
5. Are you an independent artist or are you represented by an agency?
I am an independent artist. In more than one way. I'm also a freelance photographer and graphic designer. I even designed my own book cover! Talk about a money saver. Between that and all of the promotional materials that I have created for the novel, I have saved tons!
6. Any favorite bands? Do you use music to inspire you as you write?
OH WOW! I LOVE ALL TYPES OF MUSIC! Right now, some of my favs to listen to are The Black Keys, Adele, Skrillex, The Prodigy, Snow Patrol, and Alabama Shakes. Some of my all-time faves are: Sarah McLachlan, Tool, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Neil Diamond (hey, don't judge. LOL), Bob Seger, Norah Jones, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Marilyn Manson, and AC/DC. But I also listen to classical, jazz, new age/meditation music, and country music from the late 70's to the mid-90's.
7. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
Anyone can write a book, but not everyone can write a book. Simple as that. I have seen them all / read only a few. To be even halfway successful at it, you have to stay dedicated and focused. You need pre-readers and reviewers as well as a good editor. And either have the patience and the resilience to deal with multiple rejections by agents and/or publishers, or be able to work as hard as an agent and/or publisher would for you if you were accepted by them. Just writing the story doesn't automatically gain you some respect in the writing community.
8. Anything you would like to share with readers on a personal note that would allow them to get to know you better?
I'm an open book. I went through a lot during my childhood, and survived. I am on my second pacemaker and am currently living with Sjogren's (which is a strain of Lupus). I am on my second marriage. The first one might not have worked as I had hoped, but the second one is a bit magical. I met him on facebook, over the Mafia Wars game. We will be married 3 years in January! I have an 8 year old son who is my world. I'm a lefty. I'm a girl, as in I'm a big sap. I can cry at commercials, if they are sweet enough (damn you Sarah McLachlan and your animal rescue commercial! damn you!). I'm still a tomboy, which makes my relationship with my son that much more enjoyable. We can sit on the sofa and have a farting/belching contest, or talk about poop and boogers. I hope our relationship will continue to be as close once he's older. I am a big dreamer. I daydream all of the time. I think because of that, I have been able to write such an expressive story!
9. Do you find it hard to share your work with others?
Not anymore. I used to. I was always self-conscious about my work. I always feared someone finding a mistake, or finding a better way of wording something I wrote. Well, duh, of course they will. BUT why is that a bad thing? OK sure, too many mistakes (grammatically speaking) would kill any book, but even books that have gone through publishers have mistakes. My story, my mistakes, they are all me. My story wouldn't be the same without them.
10. Did your writing come from just a need to express yourself or a particular experience that you had?
I believe that I was writing about my own transformation at the time, and didn't know it. And no, I do NOT believe that I'm a werewolf. But the message of my story is that there is no monster greater than your own and that if you can conquer that beast, there isn't anything you can't do. The message read loud and clear once the story was finished.
I feel that everyone has a bit of themselves in the story(ies) that they write. At least the good ones do.
Another one of my favorite series is a FREEBIE on Amazon...
October 26, 2012 through October 28, 2012
Breathless is the first book in the Blue Fire Saga, a paranormal romance series set at a small college in present day Connecticut. There are currently four books in the series.
Weston College freshman Leesa Nyland has been fascinated by vampires since she was three years old. That's when her mom started acting weird, insisting sunlight hurt her skin because she'd been bitten by a one-fanged vampire.
But fascinated doesn't mean Leesa believes. Any more than she believes in blue fire, people who live for centuries, and kisses that can kill. But when her beloved older brother suddenly disappears, she is forced to consider all these and more. She also has to figure out what to do about her mysterious new boyfriend. She knows Rave likes her a lot--so why won't he kiss her?
As Leesa draws closer to finding her brother, she faces some gut-wrenching decisions. Should she risk her mom's life trying to "cure" her? Should she continue seeing Rave, after he reveals his dangerous secret? And most terrifying of all, should she make the ultimate sacrifice-give up her humanity-to save her brother?

For David and Michelle acting is a passion. There is undeniable chemistry between them on the set of their new movie. They play Misha and Emerson, highly trained werewolf slayers. After a night of passion following a steamy love scene the fantasy they have been acting out over spills into reality, with dire consequences.
I am so excited for T.K Harris, as an aspiring author myself, I can see just how much sacrifice and dedication it takes to fulfill one's dream. Congratulations on being PUBLISHED!!! T K Harris has graciously agreed to gift one lucky person an e-book copy of Phantom Dreams.
T.K. Harris, who currently lives in Colorado, is a Solutions Architect, teacher, and full-time mother. She has been a story teller since she could talk and has had several short stories purchased by professional magazines such as Woman's World. She is excited that her first novel - Phantom Dreams - has now been published.
Guest Post: Do you have any writing tips, advice, or techniques for aspiring writers?
Writing Tips for "New" Writers (In 12 Easy Steps. Ha!) Whether you've been writing for years or just getting started, we can all use a little help. Though I have sold several short stories and finally published a novel, I can't give you the same kind of tips as a pro. I won't even try! For that, I think one of the best books I've read is Stephen King's "On Writing". It’s a weird mash of autobiographical information with a heaping dose of practical advice toward the end. If you haven't read it, read it. If you haven't bought it, buy it. It's worth it. OK, now for advice from a newbie published author. I tried it all I think. Outlines, free-form writing, story boarding, classes, articles, books, writing while upside down chanting yoga like prayers… OK, maybe not that last part. But I may just have to try it the next time I'm staring at the screen with a "deer in the headlight" expression. Everyone works differently. But I really hate when an "advice" piece says something like that, or "just try it until you find something that works for you". You can. But, sometimes you want to say "Just tell me already!". So, here goes: Step 1) Type up a character sheet on each character. Its ok if they change as you go. But at least have the basics such as full name, age, hair and eye color, etc. Do this for every character. Step 2) Find a wall, a board, it doesn't matter. Just find a place where you can put up your character profiles and a bunch of 3 x 5 cards and they can stay. For months if need be. (I used my dinning room for awhile and then my bedroom wall). My suggestion is to use paint safe tape or thumb tacks (because both can be pulled off and reused numerous times – although the tape leaves no marks). This wall should really be close to where you write, maybe across the room so you have to get up and stretch your legs and rest your eyes. But not too far away. Step 3) Write. Write until you finish your story or novel or opus magnum. Don't stop, don't rethink. Write. With ONE exception. When you've finished that paragraph, chapter, or even just your 7 words for the day, grab a 3 x 5 card, a pen, and highlighter(s) and write down the relevant pieces of information (by chapter or scene) that occurred. For me this was the major points in the each chapter of Phantom Dreams such as who lead what scene, any deaths that occurred, how, and who died. (You'd be surprised how quickly your dead bodies get mixed up!). You can use the highlighter to highlight things like when a major turning point occurred. In my case, I used red to highlight each killing and Kathy's escalating dreams. NUMBER the cards sequentially. Either by chapter or scene and try not to put too much information on these. These note cards and character profiles are going to do a couple of things for you later on. Step 4) Use the cards as reference points to keep you on track and remembering things like what your character looks like and how old they are. (Kathy changed age in my first draft 5 times! Obviously I didn't start out with Step 1. :/ ) Step 5) You've finished your first draft! Have a glass of wine, beer, or whatever. Put your manuscript and your cards up. Celebrate. And then ignore that manuscript for at least a month. Two months is better. And find another project. Try something new to help refill your creative well. You're going to need it… Because this is a blog and I'm supposed to keep it short, if you're interested in receiving the entire article and the next 7 steps, simply contact me at: https://www.tkharrisonline.com and go to the contact page OR my Phantom Dreams page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Phantom-Dreams/281589768625691?ref=ts&fref=ts and leave a comment requesting the article. Welcome to The Charleston Vampire Chronicles by L.A. Freed Blog Tour 2012
I am so enthralled with this series, it is so different than anything else I have read out there. I was asked if I wanted to participate in this Blog Tour, of Course, it is VAMPIRES!! LOL I am so glad I did, if you like realistic vampire reads, then this is one for sure.
Blood Thirst:
My heart slammed inside my chest as I fought him. My fear became anger; I knew I would die before I'd let him violate me. I squirmed beneath him and bucked violently, nearly knocking him off. He retaliated by driving his weight harder against me and shoving his knee into my belly. Vomit rose in my throat. Cold pain pierced my neck, and I drew in a strangled gasp as I realized he must have a knife. Wet warmth slid across my throat. He pressed his face against me and locked his mouth over the source of my pain. Warmth spread through me and grew into the heat of need. I found myself pushing into him as my fear dissolved. My heart slowed and matched each pull as he drew the very life out of me. Pounding. Pounding. Pounding. It was ecstasy, and I wanted it to go on forever. Then the sound of my heart grew faint, and he pulled away from me. He lifted his head and turned to look at me. Blood colored his lips like the grease paint smile of a clown, and ran in a jagged line from the corner of his mouth to the tip of his chin where it hung in a small, clotted drip. He smiled. The sight of the small, sharp fangs shocked me back into fear. THIS IS DEATH.
My Review: Blood Thirst by L.A. Freed My rating: 5 of 5 Hearts ARC for Review. OMGosh Thanks for the opportunity to Read-N-Review this first Installment of Charleston Vampire Chronicles - Blood Thirst by L. A. Freed. It does NOT disappoint. First off I went into this blind, not knowing what to expect. WOW! I was drawn in from the start when Angela Trenton is attacked and left for dead. As she wonders what is happening to her, Elijah, an older vampire enters her world and the story takes off into an amazing journey through Angela's vampiric transformation. Angela is dead and Ainjul is born, I think because Elijah is from a different time, his pronunciation is different, anyway, Ainjul is the name used for Angela from this point on. As Ainjul goes through the 3 month transformation, the author's writing describes what is happening in detail making this story uniquely different from all others I have read.. She has even a canine vampire, now that is an awesome twist, the name of this canine is, well let's just say, fun. When Ainjul finally meets Matthew the story gets really intriguing, a real page turner for sure. The world is very well described, consistent, full of intense emotions, mystery, suspense, terror, and a little of well placed humor. I enjoyed reading this immensely... The characters are well described bringing their victories and defeats to life.. Absolutely Amazing.. I would recommend this read for those 18+ and over due to its mature theme.

Though she may be a witch with extraordinary powers, there's no changing the obvious gaps between them.
He could never expect her to accept him as something more…
