Time for Death by Christie Silvers Interview and Giveaway

Christie Silvers, author of  Time for Death, stopped by the blog today. Welcome to I Love My Authors Christie, it is so wonderful to have you here today.

Christie Silvers is a wife, mother, and writer of urban fantasy with a touch of naughtiness.  Creatures that go bump in the night inspire her.  From time to time those creatures turn to the saucy side of things and that's when Christie dabbles in the paranormal erotic side of writing.  She never knows what the characters will do until they're already doing it, which makes for some interesting late night writing sessions.

Christie lives in north Georgia with her husband of forever, three daughters, four dogs, nine chickens, and numerous outside cats.  Aside from reading, writing, laundry, rushing her children to a variety of school functions and trying not to have a panic attack while teaching her 15 year old to drive, Christie spends her spare time wondering when she'll actually have spare time to spare.

The Interview

 When did you start writing?

I've always enjoyed writing, even from a very young age.  My very first book was written by a 5 year old Christie and was about an Indian girl who wanted a dog.  Luckily her parents were quite generous and she got her dog.

I got serious about writing back in 2006.  I started out with web content articles, but soon realized they didn't hold the draw for me that fiction did.  Later that year I started on my first novel, A Midnight Infatuation, and that kickstarted my life as "author."  I haven't looked back since.

What inspired you to do it?

Inspiration comes in many forms.  Article writing came to me as a way to bring in extra income.  I was inspired to write novels by a deep desire to write something that entertained instead of informed.  Information is everywhere; it bores me.  Fantasy on the other hand is entertaining, exciting, it takes me to a different place in this world, or the next.

What projects have you done?

Currently I have 6 novels, 1 novella, 1 short story, and a hardbound book with the complete Alex & Fiona series in one.

A Midnight Infatuation  (Alex & Fiona, book 1)
A Birth at Dawn (Alex & Fiona, book 2)
A Twilight Abduction (Alex & Fiona, book 2)
Alex & Fiona Forever (The Complete Series)
Dark Promises: A Novella
Time for Death (Liz Baker, book 1)
Kill Me Next Week (Liz Baker, book 2)
Killer Intentions (Liz Baker, book 3)
Death Reflected (Liz Baker short story)

Any new projects coming up?

I'm currently in edits on an erotic short, A Girl and Her Djinn, and will soon be starting the fourth Liz Baker book, yet untitled.

Are you an independent artist or are you represented by an agency?

Independent all the way, baby!

Any favorite bands? Do you use music to inspire you as you write?

Oh, gosh.  This is one of those multi-tiered questions.  Eek!  Okay, here it goes:  Yes, music does inspire me as I write, but--and it's a big BUT--sometimes it distracts me from my writing.  First off, plugging my ears with music helps to block out the world around me as I work.  Some lyrics remind me of my characters, help me set the tone of a scene, push a plot faster.  However, on the flipside of the coin, I tend to get distracted singing along, doing the little dancing in the desk chair bit, and pushing the skip button on the MP3 player.  I think the older I get the easier it is for music to distract me while I'm working.

As for favorite bands, I have a lot.  It basically runs like this:  Anything hard core, heavy metal, loud when I'm writing fight scenes; something sensual, erotic, naughty for the sex scenes; upbeat music for happy times; and angry-with-the-world music when Liz Baker is pissed off with something/someone.  My playlist has everything from Pink, Tyga, Marilyn Manson, Corn, Blackeyed Peas, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Snoop Dogg, Rob Zombie, and even some Train, Three Days Grace, Usher, and Bitter Sweet.  Plus many more!  I enjoy all sorts of music.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

Be persistant!  Persistance is key in this business.  You have to keep writing, keep promoting, keep meeting new people, and keep yourself open to new experiences.  Writers have a tendency to lock themselves away in their own little solitary worlds, but you have to get out there if you want to make a name for yourself and your work.

Anything you would like to share with readers on a personal note that would allow them to get to know you better?

Hmm, I'm pretty much an open book, as any of my Facebook friends know, but I guess if I had to pick something to share it would have to be that I have a take-charge personality.  Some would consider it bossy, but I like take-charge better.  LOL!  If I say I'm going to do something, then by golly I'll do it.  I have a love/hate relationship with deadlines.  And lastly, I need to be pushed hard into something new and unknown (I like to have all the facts first).  In the end, I'm fairly boring. . .at least in my mind I am.

Do you find it hard to share your work with others?

Not too much.  I don't like to share my work with anyone until I'm finished with it, but even then it's not too bad because I have a select group of readers at that point.  My beta readers always tell me where something is screwed up, or a story flow isn't quite right.  After they go through it, and I fix everything they've pointed out, I just have to let it go.  It's hard to watch your work enter the public world, but at some point I just let it go and move onto the next project.

Did your writing come from just a need to express yourself or a particular experience that you had?

Some people think that writing is a choice made by the writer.  Sure, you get to pick when and where you write, but in the end writing is brought on by a deep need to write.  A story idea will hit and won't stop pestering you until you've done it as much justice as you can.  My writing comes from a need to get the stories out of my head, to make the voices stop yelling at me to take dictation for them.  Once that's complete, the characters settle down for a little while. . .until they decide it's time for another adventure.  All the readers out there will think it's insane, but the writers will understand completely.  Yes, we can be quite the eccentric group of people.  ;)
